Over its long production life, the range has used several diesel engines, including the 1HZ and 1HD-FTE in earlier vehicles and the 1VD-FTV 4.5L turbo-diesel V8 in later models.
The current Australian 70 Series has moved to Toyota's 1GD-FTV 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel, so exhaust selection needs to account for both engine generation and emissions equipment rather than treating all 70 Series vehicles as the same.
200 Series (2007–2021): The more road-oriented LandCruiser wagon, commonly fitted in Australia with the 1VD-FTV 4.5L twin-turbo diesel V8. Later diesel models were fitted with a factory DPF, which changes which exhaust upgrades are appropriate.
300 Series (2021–present): The current-generation LandCruiser wagon, moving from the V8 to Toyota's F33A-FTV 3.3L twin-turbo V6 diesel, together with modern factory emissions equipment including a DPF.

The diesel 200 Series is well known for its 1VD-FTV 4.5L twin-turbo V8, and there are a number of exhaust configurations available depending on the year of the vehicle.
Earlier non-DPF vehicles can have different upgrade options to the later DPF-equipped models.
For later 200 Series vehicles fitted with a factory DPF, a DPF-back exhaust is generally the relevant upgrade path — replacing exhaust components downstream of the DPF while leaving the factory filter and its emissions-control function intact.
This makes the vehicle's build year particularly important when selecting a 200 Series exhaust. Two visually similar 200 Series LandCruisers may require quite different systems depending on their emissions configuration.

Toyota replaced the 200 Series V8 with the F33A-FTV 3.3L twin-turbo V6 diesel, bringing a new exhaust layout and a more complex factory emissions system.

Rather than trying to make the 300 sound like an older V8 LandCruiser, a well-selected system is more about giving the V6 a deeper and more noticeable exhaust character while maintaining comfortable cruising manners.
That's particularly important on the 300 Series because many are used for long-distance touring, caravan towing and family travel. More volume isn't necessarily better if it introduces drone into the cabin at highway speeds.

Sound and Towing Notes for Diesel LandCruisers
