A Generation-by-Generation Rundown

D22 (1997–2015): The longest-running Navara generation in Australia, sold well past its "official" replacement thanks to its reputation as a tough, simple workhorse. Later diesel D22s picked up the 2.5L turbo-diesel YD25, which is the version most commonly upgraded today.

D40 (2005–2015): Introduced a larger, more car-like driving experience with the 2.5L YD25 and, in later models, the 3.0L V6 V9X diesel. The V6 variant in particular is a popular candidate for a full turbo-back upgrade.

D23/NP300 (2015–2025): The generation many Australian owners know as the NP300 Navara. It uses the 2.3L YS23 diesel in single-turbo and twin-turbo forms, depending on the model and specification. Turbo-Back vs DPF-Back for the Navara

Turbo-back: Replaces the system from the turbo outlet and is most commonly fitted to older non-DPF Navaras. DPF-back: Replaces everything behind the factory DPF while leaving the DPF, catalytic converter and upstream emissions equipment in place. Sound Character: What to Expect at Idle and Under Load

The YD25 four-cylinder diesel in the D22 and D40 has a distinctive diesel clatter at idle that an exhaust upgrade won't fully mask, but a well-designed system will generally deepen the note and reduce some of the flat, boxy sound of the factory exhaust. The V6 in later D40 models and the 2.3L diesel in the D23 tend to produce a more noticeable exhaust note under load and acceleration, particularly with a quality mandrel-bent system.
